The council's Pest Control team investigate and, where necessary, treat premises and land where designated pests are found which are either by their behaviour, location or activity deemed detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the people of West Lothian.
West Lothian Council provides a comprehensive service to deal with bed-bug infestations. Bed-bug infestations can take a number of months to control and to be effective requires the total co-operation of the householder.
Wasps are a nuisance during the months of May through to September. As such the council provides a non-statutory service to control nests which are causing a nuisance to people living, working or visiting West Lothian.
Moles, although not being a health issue can cause unsightly damage to lawns, fields, play areas etc. As such they may be controlled either by trapping or (in the case of a limited area) gassing. They may cause an injury hazard to livestock due to instability of the ground.
The grey or American squirrel (Scurius carolinensis) is a major pest and is required to be controlled under law. West Lothian Council now provide a trapping service for Grey Squirrels within houses as they can cause a lot of damage and may put the health of occupiers at risk
